Description
The Crayford War Memorial, located in the grounds of Crayford Manor, was unveiled on 13 June 1954. It was constructed by Messrs S G and A Agombar, with bronze plaques created by Messrs Comyn Ching and Co. Ltd. The memorial is designed in a Moderne style.
The structure is made of brick in English bond and features bronze panels. It consists of a free-standing brick wall divided into five panels, topped with gabled brick coping. The central panel is taller and has ramped coping with tiles set on edge at the corners. On the south-west side, there are three attached bronze panels.
The central panel displays the inscription 'CRAYFORD MEMORIAL GARDEN' along with the shield of Kent beneath it. Below this, it features the well-known lines from Laurence Binyon's poem "For the Fallen": 'THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD, AS WE WHO ARE LEFT GROW OLD: / AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE / YEARS CONDEMN, / AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN, AND IN THE MORNING / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'
The two outer panels list the names of the fallen from both world wars. The left panel contains 142 names of His Majesty's forces who died in the First World War, while the right panel continues with names of those who perished in the Second World War, totaling 153 names. Additionally, the right panel includes the names of 68 civilian casualties from the Second World War.
Attached to the side panels on the south-east side are brick planters, and in front of the central panel, there is a separate low rectangular brick planter.
