Description
Built in 1906 as a technical institute and secondary school, later becoming a college of technology, this building is constructed of red brick with cream tile and terracotta detailing, and has a slate roof with brick and tiled chimneystacks, along with a central copper and wooden cupola. Designed by W Egerton, likely the council architect, it is built in the Queen Anne style. The front elevation along Holly Hill Road has 11 windows, while the northern elevation along Erith Road has 9 windows, and the southern elevation has 8 windows. Most windows are three-tier vertical sash windows.
The front features a recessed central seven-bay section and two projecting two-bay ends. The central section has first-floor segmental-headed arched windows illuminating the central hall, and a single-story wing with a floral terracotta frieze and a central doorcase bearing the date 1906. The entrance is approached by a double staircase with terracotta balusters and cast iron light fittings. A low red brick wall with cast iron panels and red brick piers with stone caps, and cast iron gates runs attached to the front. The wall and panels are stepped along Upper Holly Hill Road and Erith Road to account for changes in ground level.
The left gabled wing is three stories high, with the additional story functioning as a basement due to the sloping site; it features two windows per floor. The side elevation of this wing includes two truncated gables with Venetian-style windows to the top floor, eight windows below, and original windows to ground floor level, though two later 20th-century doors were inserted into original openings. The right gabled wing displays a tablet inscribed "Erith Technical Institute and Secondary School" on the gable and has two ground-floor windows. The Erith Road front has nine ground-floor windows; the first floor has two large windows, originally designed for the art departments, retaining original glazing bars of nine large panes each, topped by gables with elaborate moulded tiled decoration, two small windows between them, and one to the right. The rear elevation is of stock brick with red brick dressings, incorporates two gables, and retains its original windows.
The interior features a full-height central hall with a hammerbeam roof, a balcony on three sides, and two staircases to the rear of the wings.
