Description
The First World War memorial at St John the Baptist Church in Erith was erected in 1921. It is made of carved granite and stands in the churchyard. The memorial features a Celtic cross made of hammer-dressed grey granite, which is mounted on a tapering shaft, a plinth, and a square base, all set within a square kerb of the same granite. The designer of the memorial is unknown. The shaft is inscribed in lead lettering with the words: "IN/ GRATEFUL AND/ SACRED MEMORY/ OF THE FOLLOWING/ FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/", while the front of the base reads: “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”. The names of 101 individuals who died in the war are listed in twin columns on each side of the plinth.
