Description
Christ Church is a parish church built in 1874 by J P St Aubyn. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with decorative polychrome red brick and stone dressings, topped with a red tiled roof. The church features mainly lancet windows, particularly paired in the nave. It has a five-bay nave with aisles and entrances located in the narthex. There is an almost detached north-west tower added in 1914, which has a stone broached spire. The chancel includes a buttressed polygonal apse, a south chapel with a polygonal apse, and a north vestry.
Inside, the nave arcade is supported by round piers with stiff-leaf capitals. The nave boasts a three-tier hammerbeam roof with curved braces resting on stone corbels. The chancel is adorned with five fine lancet windows created by Hardman in 1875, illustrating scenes from the Gospels. It also features a reredos with a painted triptych of the Adoration of the Magi in a 15th-century Italian style by A O Hemming from 1904, stencilled decoration, triple sedilia, and polychrome tiles. The nave contains the original carved wooden lectern, pews, a stone and granite font, and a wall tablet on the west wall commemorating Thomas Ruck, who was the organist from 1881 to 1918. This tablet includes mosaic cherubs and eight painted panels depicting scenes from the early history of the Church in England, ranging from the martyrdom of St Alban to the martyrdom of St Edmund, created by Ward and Hughes between 1906 and 1909.
