Description
The Erith (Christ Church) War Memorial is a tall marble cross featuring a reverse sword carved in relief on the front face, surrounded by a laurel wreath at the hilt. Below the tip of the sword is the inscription "1914 / -- / 1919." The cross is positioned on a marble platform and plinth, both of which have inscriptions. The front face of the platform states "TO THE GLORY OF GOD," while the front of the plinth reads "AND IN MEMORY OF / (NAMES)," with additional names inscribed on the back face. This is set on a two-stepped base, with the upper section being significantly larger. The front face of the base includes the inscription "WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / THAT WE MIGHT LIVE / 'OBEDIENT UNTO DEATH.' / 'JESU MERCY.'" The entire memorial is encircled by dwarf pillars connected by chains.
