Description

This building is a workshop located to the southeast of the former Crossness Pumping Station, constructed between 1862 and 1865. It was built by contractor William Webster, following designs by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and Charles Henry Driver. The workshop is made of Flemish bond yellow brick, featuring gauged red brick dressings and Portland stone for the kneelers and buttresses. It has a gabled slate roof with glazed rooflights and a rectangular plan.

The gable ends, each with three bays, have stone-coped gables with moulded kneelers. The plank double doors are set within a semi-circular arched architrave, which has raised imposts and a dog-tooth hood mould. This is situated within a similar third recessed arch that is flanked by recessed panels. The doorway is also flanked by similar blind arches set in square-headed recessed bays, adorned with carved stone corbels supporting an arcaded frieze and a dentilled dog-tooth cornice.

The north wall features 12 bays with similar blind arches in square-headed recessed bays, along with a four-bay lean-to that has a moulded stone cornice and a semi-circular arched east doorway with a fanlight. The south wall consists of 24 bays, divided by offset buttresses, with each recessed bay displaying a similar frieze and cornice.

Inside, the workshop boasts a 12-bay wrought-iron roof. It is one of a pair of workshops that face the south elevation of the boiler house of Bazalgette's main engine house, also built between 1862 and 1865.
