Description
The 'Delight' sculpture, created between 1962 and 1967 by A H Gerrard, is located in Abbey Wood Park on the north side of Finchale Road. This piece is made from Portland stone blocks set on a brick and concrete base, with the brick plinth covered in slate panels. The sculpture features a rectangular frieze approximately 27 feet long, showcasing a relief pattern of semi-abstract Cubist dancing figures, which are most clearly visible on the right side. The lines of the sculpture create a contrast with the grid of the underlying blocks. A central slate panel displays the title and the name of the sculptor. Gerrard, although not widely known, was an artist and teacher who focused on this unique style of relief carving, and this work is considered his largest and most significant piece.
