Description

Middlegate House, also known as the Master Store Keeper's House, is a house located on Plumstead Road in Woolwich, built in 1809. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with stone dressings and features a darker brick second storey. The roof is not visible. The house has a double-depth plan with a central stair and is designed in the late Georgian style. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has a three-window range.

The symmetrical front includes a ground-floor string, cornice, and blocking course. There are five steps leading up to a Greek Doric porch, which has been enclosed with wood panels and glazing, and features late 19th-century double doors. The inner doorway is adorned with a cornice and a patterned segmental-arched fanlight above a six-panel half-glazed door, with reeded jambs and sidelights. The ground-floor French windows have gauged brick flat arches and are flanked by reeded pilasters, while the upper storey has 6/6-pane sash windows. The sides and rear of the house are plain with a two-window design and include a rear stair turret. An office, built around 1938, is attached to the rear.

Inside, the house features a central entrance stair hall with an open well stair that has a curtail and wreathed rail, cast-iron stick balusters and newels, reeded jambs, and shuttered ground-floor windows. There is also a cast-iron mid-19th-century basement range and late Georgian joinery. Historically, it was built as the Master Store Keeper's House, and it is possible that the second storey was added later.
