Description

The Officers’ Block (Building eleven) at the Royal Arsenal is an ordnance building constructed between 1717 and 1720, designed by Henry Lidgebird. It is built of Flemish bond stock brick with a stone cope to the slate mansard roof and brick stacks. The building follows a double-depth plan and presents a symmetrical 11-window range over three storeys. A panelled door is set within an early 18th century porch on the right, and a similar porch of 1870 is located on the left. Gauged brick segmental arches feature over 4-pane sashes, while smaller 20th-century two-light casements are incorporated into the second floor. Moulded brick string courses run at cill level and beneath the parapet, which is raised over the central bay. A wing of similar materials was added to the rear in the early 19th century. The interior retains early 18th century joinery, enriched marble fireplaces, and a staircase on the right with a fine wrought-iron balustrade. This building is one of several constructed by Lidgebird at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, between 1717 and 1720.
