Description

The main entrance to the Royal Arsenal, dated 1829 with upper parts from the late 19th century, is a two-storey building featuring three windows and blank side abutments. The ground floor has three carriage entrances, with the center entrance being taller. The yellow brick ground floor is adorned with stone arches that have keystones, supporting a stone band on the first floor that highlights the taller center section. This band serves as the cill for the side sections. The upper part is made of red brick and includes stone dressings. Full-height buttresses are present on the center section, while the side sections have buttresses that rise to one-third of their height. A parapet rests on a stone and brick corbel table, and a clock is positioned at the center. The central three-light and side two-light windows are mullioned and transomed, featuring sashes below the transom and margin lights at the heads. There are plaques inserted in the buttresses inscribed with "1829 B;" and below the side windows, inscribed "G.R. IV," along with a shield depicting three guns. Mortars bearing the Royal Cipher of George IV are mounted on the parapets of the side abutments.
