Description
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, located on Hadley Green Road in Monken Hadley, dates back to around 1494, as indicated by the date on the west tower. The church is constructed from flint and ironstone and features many 19th-century additions. It underwent significant restoration between 1848 and 1850 by architect G.E. Street, marking his first church restoration project. The interior primarily reflects 19th-century design, with a four-bay nave and a hammerbeam roof. A notable feature is a very rare 18th-century copper beacon on the tower. The stained glass, created by Warrington in 1846, adds to the church's character. Inside, there are small brasses and a monument to Sir Roger Wilbraham, crafted by Nicholas Stone in 1616. The churchyard is home to contemporary tombs, including those of W.M. Thackeray, Ms. Hester Chapone, and John Monro, M.D.
