Description

These are a group of artisans' cottages dating from 1910, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The cottages are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond, with some sections featuring tile hanging, and have gable-headed half dormers to the first floor. The roofs are tiled, with swept and boxed eaves. The cottages have a rectangular plan and a six-window range, built in a Vernacular Revival style. The entrances are recessed, with round arched surrounds, and the porches to numbers 130 and 136 are on returns. Ground-floor windows are predominantly two- and three-light casements, with some square casements, while first-floor windows are of three lights. All casements are of an original design, and the doors to numbers 132 and 134 are also original; the doors to the other cottages were not visible. The right gable end features a two-window range. The rear elevation, visible from Asmuns Hill, exhibits numerous outshuts and windows of varying sizes. First-floor dormers include gabled, tile-hung dormers at the ends, and gableted and hipped dormers along the rest of the block, creating a distinctive, low roof silhouette where the hips sweep down to the outshuts. The ridge of each dormer is punctuated by a ridge stack, which are a key feature of the design, providing vertical accents and variety to the elevation, with differing dimensions. Axial stacks are located between the first- and second-, and fifth- and sixth-window ranges; the stack on the central party wall is square and narrower, while the axial ridge stacks to the gable ends are small. These cottages form part of a significant group that includes numbers 113, 123-133 (odd), 126-156 (even) Willifield Way and 38, 40 and 42 Asmuns Hill.
