Description

These artisans' cottages at 144, 146, and 148 Willifield Way were built in 1910 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a tile roof featuring swept eaves and exposed rafter ends; the right gable is gabled, and the left is a gable end.

The cottages are two storeys high, arranged in an "L" shape modeled after a single-ended hall house, with a four-window-wide hall range forming the main portion of Nos. 144 and 146, and No. 148 acting as a crosswing with a two-window-wide, facing gable. The entrance to No. 144 is through a round-arched recessed porch on the return side. The entrance to No. 146 is off a round-arched cross passage where the wings join, while the entrance to No. 148 is through a broad, segmental-arched recessed porch, with late 20th-century glazing. Most windows are segmentally arched, though the first-floor windows of Nos. 144 and 146, in ranges one through three, have hipped half dormers. A diminutive two-light casement sits close to the eaves on the right-hand side, and a half-hipped, weatherboarded dormer sits above the entrance to No. 148, flanked by a roof projection of unknown purpose and date that is not original. A square stack is visible in the valley between the facing gable, while ridge stacks are present along the party wall between Nos. 146 and 148, above the cross passage, and along the axial ridge between Nos. 144 and 146. A square stack is also on the right end wall, penetrating the half-hip on the right return. Casements in Nos. 144 and 146 have been altered, while those in No. 148 retain their original design.

The cottages are part of a larger group that includes Nos. 113, 123-133 (odd), 126-156 (even) Willifield Way, and 38, 40, and 42 Asmuns Hill (even).
