Description

A pair of artisans' cottages dating from approximately 1910, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, situated within the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The cottages are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with areas of tile hanging, and have hipped tile roofs. The roof to number 140 is parapeted, while number 142 features a tile-hung half dormer with eaves returns. The asymmetrical design originally functioned as a visual transition towards a demolished clubhouse that formerly faced Willifield Green. The cottages are two storeys high with scattered window placement. Number 140 exhibits a more formal appearance, contrasting with the looser, more vernacular feel of number 142. Entrances are located on the returns, which follow an oblique line to number 140; the entrance to 140 is sheltered by a half-hipped porch. The parapet of number 140 becomes a facing gable on the main elevation. Number 142 has a round-arched porch, and the rear has been altered. Axial ridge stacks are present on the party wall, with a square stack to the end wall of number 142, and a rear stack to number 140. The cottages retain many original casement windows. They form part of a larger group including numbers 113, 123-133 (odd), 126-156 (even) Willifield Way, and numbers 38, 40 and 42 Asmuns Hill.
