Description

Numbers 1 to 7 and attached railings are a group of houses dating from 1935, designed by G. G. Winbourne as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. They demonstrate the International Modern style. The houses are built of brick with painted render, featuring flat roofs and Crittall windows. Each house is two storeys high, with roof-top structures and a glazed stair tower. The houses have a three-window range, and are largely identical in appearance, with a recessed entrance, balconies to the first floor, and a roof terrace. Curved quadrants project from the side ranges, featuring metal strip windows to the curves and first-floor French doors. Garages are located within the left-hand ranges of Numbers 1 and 3, and in the right-hand ranges of Numbers 5 and 7. A glazed stair tower to Number 1 is visible on the left return. A camber-headed passage, characteristic of early 20th-century designs by Parker and Unwin, runs centrally through the group. The original doors, featuring metal grilles formed of French curves, remain at Numbers 5 and 7. Numbers 1 to 7, along with Numbers 9 to 17 (odd) and Numbers 2 to 18 (even), form a noteworthy group of Modern Movement houses that retain their original features and integrity.
