Description
This property comprises numbers 2 to 8, and attached railings, located on Lytton Close in Barnet, within the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The houses were designed by G. G. Winbourne and built in 1935. They are constructed of brick with painted render, and have flat roofs. The windows are Crittall windows, and the houses are two storeys high, incorporating roof-top structures and a glazed stair tower. They are designed in the International Modern style.
The design of each house is consistent, featuring a recessed entrance range with balconies to the first floor and a roof terrace. Curved quadrants project outwards, and there are metal strip windows to the curved sections, along with first-floor French doors. The original design doors remain at numbers 2 and 8, featuring a metal grille formed using French curves. A cambered passage, known as a 'twitten', runs centrally and mirrors similar passages found in earlier 20th-century buildings by Parker and Unwin within the original Suburb’s artisan’s quarter. Numbers 1 to 13 (odd) and 2 to 18 (even) together form a significant group of Modern Movement houses exhibiting a high degree of original features and overall integrity.
