Description
Nos. 1 to 8, North Square, form a continuous range creating the north-west corner of the square. These buildings date from the 18th century and were designed by Lutyens. They are constructed of grey and red brick. No. 1 has a projecting end with three windows to the ground floor, two to the first floor, and one dormer window. The front door features a mezzanine fanlight composed of twelve glazed squares, with a cornice hood supported on consoles. Nos. 2 and 4 have projecting sections topped with balustraded flat roofs. These sections are three bays wide with centre doors set within stone rusticated surrounds. Above each door is a floor-to-ceiling window flanked by brick niches. No. 4 presents a flat front with four bays, the first-floor windows being floor-to-ceiling height. No. 5 features a central rusticated archway, with a heavy key block, triglyph frieze, and cornice extending the full height of the two storeys. No. 6 comprises three bays with three high dormers displaying cambered cornices. No. 7 projects slightly and has a hipped roof, a centre door framed by an eared architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and cornice, with a pair of canted bays on either side. No. 8 is two storeys plus an attic storey, consisting of three bays, and it has a return frontage to Erskine Hill.
