Description
No. 5 Frith Street is a terrace house built around 1731, likely by the bricklayer Joel Johnson. The building is constructed of red lintel brick with a concealed roof and stands four storeys high, with the top floor added later in the 18th century. It features three windows across its facade, with the entrance located to the left. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight set within a stone architrave case, adorned with carved stone consoles supporting a cornice. The windows are segmental gauged arches with recessed box frames; some retain their original sashes while others have been replaced with later casements. A stone sill band runs along the first floor, and there is a moulded stone cornice beneath the attic storey, topped by a parapet with coping. Wrought iron railings with urn finials enclose the area in front of the house. The rear wall is made of purple-red brick and features segmental arched box framed sashes.
Inside, the house includes a closet wing that is fully panelled, with fielded panelling in the hall and front rooms, and box cornices throughout. The front room on the ground floor has an original chimneypiece. The hall leads to a staircase flanked by fluted Doric pilasters with dosserets. The staircase itself is dog-legged, featuring cut and carved strings that ascend to the first floor, closed above with moulded tread nosings and alternating turned and twisted balusters, along with a moulded handrail that scrolls in a volute at the foot and columnar newels.
