Description

No. 6 Frith Street is a pair of terrace houses built around 1718, notable for their uniform design, which is unusual for this period. The front façades were largely rebuilt in stock brick with red brick dressings in 1909, although the original dark red brick southern giant quoin pilaster, rear elevation, and fabric remain intact. The houses are four storeys high with basements and each front has three windows.

The central doorways are coupled and framed by fluted wooden Doric pilasters, topped with an entablature. The architrave and frieze project forward and feature triglyphs above the pilasters, along with a moulded cornice. The recessed glazing bar sash windows, which have segmental arches, are set in shallow through-storey recesses that rise to the main cornice, with a pilaster effect enhanced by the first-floor plat band returning across the ground floor window arches. A moulded stone cornice over the second floor is interrupted above the quoin pilasters.

The attic storey of No. 6 has been altered with the addition of a full-width casemented workshop window, and there is a parapet with coping. Inside, the houses retain many original features, including panelled furnishings, cornices, chimneypieces, and pilastered openings, along with matching dog-leg cut and carved string stairs featuring turned balusters and a voluted foot to the handrail.

No. 6 was the last residence of the essayist William Hazlitt in 1830, as noted by a plaque from the London County Council.
