Description

The Hospital for Women, located at Nos 29 and 30 Soho Square, is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1909 and 1910. It was recased by architects Adams and Holden from two earlier houses, with No 30 dating back to the late 17th century and No 29 being a rebuild from 1867 to 1869. The building features a matt glazed white faience and stucco exterior, topped with a dormered green slate mansard roof.

It has seven bays, with the left three bays rising five storeys and the right four bays rising four storeys. Faience pilasters are present between the two sections and at the corners. The entrance is located at the center of the right side and has a square-headed design. Most windows are square-headed, except for those on the first floor, which are segmental-headed, and all feature flush framed sashes. A continuous iron balcony is present on the first floor, along with individual iron balconies for the center windows on the left side, located on the second and third floors. There is a cornice above the second floor and a parapet on the right side inscribed with the words "The Hospital for Women." Wrought iron area railings complete the exterior.

The interior has not been inspected. The former No 30 was taken over by The Hospital for Women in 1851, originally established at Red Lion Square, and is understood to be the first gynaecological hospital in the world. The hospital expanded by taking over the former No 29 in 1865.
