Description

The lamp post outside Romney House East is a gas street light, likely made around 1930, featuring a Rochester-type lantern manufactured by William Sugg and Company.

The lamp post is made of cast iron and includes a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. It has a column adorned with acanthus leaves at the base and floral mouldings, topped with a short extension shaft and an Upright Rochester lantern. The tapered squared base of the column has an oval plaque with the number 6503 on one side, and possibly the manufacturer's name, which is illegible, on the other.

The lantern itself has a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, positioned above an inverted, six-mantle burner housed in a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure that features a drainage hole at its base. An enamelled steel reflector, marked with the label ‘SUGG’, is part of this assembly, which is suspended in an iron cradle supported by two curved uprights that extend from the clock box. These uprights are decorated with ironwork scrolls, a characteristic feature of inter-war Rochester lanterns.
