Description
No. 48 Upper Brook Street is a terraced house built between 1730 and 1732, with early 19th-century alterations. The exterior is faced with stucco and topped with a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high, with a basement and a dormered mansard. It features two windows across the front, with a narrow, slightly recessed extension from the 1930s over the passage to the left. The square-headed doorway on the left has a six-panel door and a rectangular fanlight above it. The windows have flat arched recessed glazing bar sashes. The parapet has coping, and the first floor is adorned with an early 19th-century cast iron balcony featuring a geometric pattern. Wrought iron area railings with urn finials complete the front. The interior has been largely altered but retains a timber geometric staircase from around 1800. Notably, this house was the residence of Mrs. Mary Pendarves, who later became known as Delaney, and was a friend of the composer Handel from 1733 to 1741.
