Description

31 Old Burlington Street is a Grade I listed terraced town house built between 1718 and 1724 by Colen Campbell. The building features a brown brick façade and a slate roof, showcasing an innovative terrace design. It stands four storeys high, with a basement and a dormered attic, and is four windows wide. The entrance is located in the second bay from the right, featuring a door with six fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight set in a stone doorcase adorned with carved consoles and a cornice.

The windows are recessed sash types without glazing bars, framed in stone architraves that are slightly eared at the ground level on the first and second floors. These windows are complemented by pulvinated friezes and cornices on the first floor, along with a sill band and a bracketed cornice above the second floor. The property is also equipped with wrought iron area railings and an overthrow with lamps.

Inside, the important interior is fully panelled and features decorative carving and mouldings, particularly in the ground floor reception rooms. The staircase is square fronted, spacious, and easy to ascend, with a cut string, carved tread ends, and three balusters per tread, flanked by twisted balusters and fluted columnar balusters. The handrail is ramped, and there is a dado. A plain wall is intended for fresco, with an existing painting in the suitable Kent manner from the early 20th century. The interior also includes enriched mouldings and carving on fine deal panelling, along with fully developed chimney pieces featuring enriched pilaster frames for the overmantels. The first-floor rooms have a simplified version of the same decorative scheme, with additional early 20th-century decoration that remains in keeping with the overall design.
