Description

Bodley House Chambers, B1 to 6, C1 to 6, D1 to 6, E1 to 6, F1 to 3, G1 to 3, H1 to 6, I1 to 6, K1 to 6 and L1 to 6, together with Nos 8, 10 and 12 Burlington Gardens, and Bodley House, Vigo Street, form a group of buildings of exceptional group value. The chambers were built between 1802 and 1803 by Henry Holland. They are constructed of stucco and brick, with a slate roof. The three-storey stucco ranges are located on either side of a covered way supported by slender cast iron columns. These ranges terminate at the north end, where Burlington Gardens meets Vigo Street, with taller three-storey brown brick blocks. The windows are glazing bar sash windows set under slightly cambered gauged arches. The ranges have parapets with plain copings. The north elevation of the brick blocks features shallow bows through the ground and first floors. No. 8 Burlington Gardens has an Adam-style radial glazed fanlight above a doorway on the right side, along with tripartite recessed glazing bar sashes under flat brick gauged arches, and recessed glazing bar sashes to the upper floors, topped by parapets with copings. Nos 10 to 12 Burlington Gardens are two-storey stucco-faced pavilions, each with a single bay front and small shops on the ground floor, framing the entrance to the Albany covered way. Each pavilion has a recessed glazing bar sash window in the centre of its first floor, a parapet with coping, and a hipped slate roof.
