Description
No 47A is a terrace house with a shop and a passage entrance to Shepherd's Market, dating from the mid 18th century. It is constructed of grey brick and has a slate roof, standing four storeys tall, with the top floor added in the mid 19th century. The building is three windows wide. The ground floor features a broad passageway leading to the Market, flanked by a mid 20th-century shop. The first and second floors have revealed wood casements with glazing bars set under flat gauged arches. There is a bracketed main cornice above the second floor, and the top floor is divided into three bays by brick piers, topped with a moulded cornice. It is said that this building was once the home of Edward Shepherd, the founder and builder of Shepherd's Market in the 1740s.
