Description
Nos. 14 and 16 New Cavendish Street are chambers or flats with a shop, built in 1900 by H Saul and G Harvey. The building is constructed of fine red brick with stone dressings and a stone-faced ground floor, using granite up to a low impost level; it has a slate roof. The design is in a restrained Free Style, incorporating Arts and Crafts details such as relief carving and lettering.
The building is five storeys tall, rising to a full-width gable. The ground floor is tripartite, with a shop flanked by recessed doorways leading to flats. These doorways are sheltered by extended cornice-hoods supported on console brackets, with stylised tree carvings in shallow relief between the brackets adjacent to the shop front. The shop front itself has a wide, deeply moulded depressed arch. The three storeys above have two widely spaced bays, each featuring a shallow segmental oriel with mullioned-transomed leaded casement lights that rise to the soffit of a prominent cornice with grouped brackets. The attic storey has two tripartite casements of Venetian design.
A frieze on the ground floor cornice is inscribed with "E. Davies and Son" in stylised lettering, sitting above the shop front and flanked by carved tree motifs. An additional carved frieze, located between the bowed oriels under the main cornice, depicts a peacock framed by foliage. The gable displays freely carved large leaf scrolls as applied kneelers, and elongated tree “finials” carved in relief rise from the arched lights of the attic windows to steps in the saddle stone. Arts and Crafts style rainwater goods are visible along the party wall lines.
