Description
Crofton House is a mansion block with shops on the ground floor, built in 1904. It features a combination of brown brick, red brick, and stone dressings, and stands four storeys high with an additional roof storey. The building has seven bays, including a polygonal corner tower on the left. The ground floor showcases 19th and 20th-century shopfronts, while the first and second floors are adorned with bay windows. The second and seventh bays from the left have square windows with five lights, each topped with ogeed gables on the dormers. The intervening bay windows are canted and consist of four lights. The windows are both mullioned and transomed, with the third floor windows featuring arched central lights. There are iron balconies on the third floor, and a cornice sits above it. The dormers are arched with mullions and transoms, and a tall banded chimney is located between the fourth and fifth bays. The building also includes an octagonal corner turret with circular windows and an ogee dome, and it displays a sparing use of delicately carved ornament.
