Description

Nigeria House is a corner office block built between 1876 and 1879 by John Gibson, with a later extension to Great Scotland Yard by Waterhouse. The building is constructed of Portland stone and features a slate roof, showcasing an elaborated Italianate style. It stands six storeys tall, plus a half basement and a stone dormered mansard.

The façade has two windows facing Northumberland Avenue, three windows turning the corner, and three more facing Great Scotland Yard. The ground floor features a corner entrance and mid-20th century display windows, framed by tall banded Doric pilasters and rusticated columns. The upper floors have paired windows in the outer bays and a single window at the curved corner, with an archivolt arch on the first floor and a segmented arch on the second floor.

The design includes a giant Corinthian order spanning the first and second floors, with the entablature broken over the bays flanking the curved corner but connected by archivolt arches on the third floor. Banded pilasters articulate the third floor, while a coved palmette cornice decorates the fourth floor. The fifth floor features a paired modillion cornice, with a parapet linking the pedimented dormers and pavilion roofs flanking the corner.
