Description

TQ 3080 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER NORTHUMBERLAND AVENUE, S1 83/45 (south side) No 9 (Nigeria House) G.V. II Corner office block. 1876-79 by John Gibson with later extension to Great Scotland Yard by Waterhouse. Portland stone, slate roof. Elaborated Italianate style. 6 storeys plus half basement and stone dormered mansard. 2 windows to Avenue, 3 turning corner and 3 to Great Scotland Yard. Ground floor has corner entrance and mid C20 display windows framed by tall banded Doric pilasters and rusticated columns in antis. Upper floors have paired windows to outer bays and single windows to curved corner, archivolt arched on 1st floor and segmented arched on 2nd floor. Giant Corinthian order through 1st and 2nd floors, the entablature broken over bays flanking curved corner but linked by archivolt arches on 3rd floor; banded pilasters articulate 3rd floor; coved palmette cornice to 4th floor and paired modillion cornice to 5th fllor with parapet linking pedimented dormers; pavilion roofs flanking corner.
