Description
Nos. 33 and 34 Craven Street are a former pair of terraced town houses that have functioned as a single property since the early to mid 19th century. Number 33 was built in 1731 by Henry Flitcroft, with alterations made around 1792 and in the early 19th century. The houses feature brown brick with channelled stucco facing on the ground floor, red brick window dressings, and a slate roof. They are four storeys tall, with the top floor added in the late 18th century, and include a basement. The façade is six windows wide, originally designed with three windows for each house. The layout follows a closet wing plan.
The central entrance has a square-headed wide doorway with recessed, panelled double doors and sidelights, topped with a moulded doorhead and fanlight. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged red brick arches. A shallow cornice-band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, and there is a parapet with coping that returns to Craven Passage, where blind windows can be seen. The property is enclosed by cast iron area railings with spike finials.
Inside, some original fielded panelling remains, along with one staircase featuring cut and carved strings and turned balusters. This building is part of the Craven family's development of their Brewhouse estate, which was laid out by Flitcroft.
