Description

Harrington House is a town mansion built around 1692, with an attic heightening in the 1950s and various interior alterations. It features a brown brick exterior with stone dressings and red brick window dressings, topped by a slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall, with a basement and a dormered mansard roof, and is seven windows wide. The three central bays are advanced and have stone quoining, with an additional half-window bay to the left.

The entrance porch, which is likely from around 1720, has Ionic columns and a balustrade above that enhances the central first-floor window. The windows are flush framed glazing bar sashes set under flat red brick gauged arches, with the central bay windows featuring stone architraves. Stone plat bands separate the storeys, and there is a stone block bracketed cornice topped with a balustraded parapet.

Although the interior has been altered, it still retains some original features such as cornices and panelling. Notably, there is a fine open well, cut string staircase from around 1720, which has carved bracket tread ends, three slender twisted balusters per tread, and a ramped handrail that sweeps to a curtail with columnar newels. Harrington House is the only remaining part of the original group of houses in Craig's Court, which was laid out around 1695.
