Description

No. 3 Whitehall is an office and shop building constructed around 1890-1900, with possible alterations to the window bays made between 1910 and 1920. It features a Portland stone and polished granite façade, potentially supported by an early steel frame, and has a slate roof. The design is ornate and reflects a vaguely French Renaissance style, characterized by a narrow tripartite composition. The building stands four storeys tall, with an attic storey and a dormered pavilion roof, and is three windows wide.

The ground floor has a modern shop front but maintains the tripartite arrangement of Doric columns that support an entablature. The window bays extend vertically from the first to the third floors, featuring bronzed casements and metal apron panels, which may be original or from the 1910-20 alterations. Above the third floor, the window openings are adorned with blind archivolt arches carved with shell fans, with the center arch featuring a keystone.

The first and second floors are articulated by three-quarter giant Ionic columns, which have dosserets over their capitals that support the Corinthian order of the third floor. The building is topped with a deep, enriched crowning entablature that includes a balustraded parapet and ornate Baroque vases, situated in front of the attic storey, which has a secondary cornice topped by a central pedimented elaborated stone dormer.
