Description
The Statue of Charles I is an equestrian statue cast in 1633 by Hubert Le Sueur. The carved pedestal, made of Portland stone, was provided by Joshua Marshall when the statue was erected on the site of Eleanor Cross in 1674-75. The bronze statue depicts the King in half-armour. This statue is significant as it is the first of its kind in England and was originally commissioned in 1630 by Sir Richard Weston, the Lord Treasurer to Charles I, for his house at Mortlake Park in Roehampton.
