Description

The National Westminster Bank, originally built as the Union Bank in 1871 by F. W. Porter, is located at 66 Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster. This bank is designed in a busy, Italianate style reminiscent of Venetian architecture, featuring a corner block that extends to Spring Gardens. The building is constructed from Portland stone and polished red granite, topped with a slate roof. It stands four storeys high, including an attic storey, and has a dormered pavilion roof and a basement.

The facade facing Trafalgar Square has three windows, with a bowed corner window, while the west return features five windows and another bowed corner. The south front also has five windows. The ground floor is marked by flat arched windows with enriched spandrels, while the first floor has square-headed, architraved, and corniced windows. The second floor showcases round arched windows with fluted pilasters and enriched spandrels.

Each bay is defined by superimposed orders of attached columns, with pilasters on the south front, and continuous entablatures. A dentil cornice is present on the first floor, bracketed to the second. Paired pilasters flank the bowed corners. A wrought iron continuous balcony adorns the first floor, with guards for the second floor windows and iron cresting in front of the set-back attic storey. The corners feature pedimented round arched dormers, and clustered "column" chimney stacks are positioned on the attic blocking course. Ornate cast iron area railings complete the exterior.
