Description

TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER JERMYN STREET, SW1 81/34 Nos 70 to 72 (consec) 14.1.70 (including Nos 21 to 24 Bury Street) - II Corner building of chambers and shops. Dated 1903, by Reginald Morphew, sculpture by Gilbert Seale. Portland stone with some red brick to Bury Street return, slate roof. Good Free Style Arts and Crafts design. 5 storeys and dormered attic. Large gable and a corner tower. 4 main bays. Ground floor retains original shop fronts divided by piers with carved caps. Broad, segmental arched entrance to upper floors off centre, the arch deeply moulded and with figure sculpture set over. 2 shallow bows above, connected by balconies in front of segmental arched window over main entrance and by cornice below 4th floor. Stone mullioned iron framed leaded casements. Large gable contains a 5 light window with colonettes. The square, battered corner tower has a similar top floor window of 4 lights and is finished off with a prominent bracketed cornice. Irregular return to Bury Street with 2 pairs of bow windows and 2 smaller gables, similar fenestration etc. Prominent corner site of which the design takes full advantage. Survey of London; vol XXIX
