Description
Nos 70 to 72 Jermyn Street is a corner building of chambers and shops, constructed in 1903 by Reginald Morphew, with sculpture by Gilbert Seale. The building is made of Portland stone, with some red brick on the return to Bury Street, and features a slate roof. It showcases a good Free Style Arts and Crafts design, standing five storeys tall with a dormered attic. The structure includes a large gable and a corner tower, with four main bays. The ground floor retains its original shop fronts, which are divided by piers with carved caps. There is a broad, segmental arched entrance to the upper floors that is off centre, featuring a deeply moulded arch with figure sculpture above. Above this entrance are two shallow bows connected by balconies in front of a segmental arched window, along with a cornice below the fourth floor. The windows are stone mullioned, iron framed, and leaded casements. The large gable includes a five-light window with colonettes, while the square, battered corner tower has a similar top floor window with four lights and is topped with a prominent bracketed cornice. The irregular return to Bury Street features two pairs of bow windows and two smaller gables, maintaining similar fenestration. The building occupies a prominent corner site, and its design fully takes advantage of this location.
