Description
Piccadilly Arcade is a large block of offices and shops located on the south side of Piccadilly in the City of Westminster, built around 1908 by Thrale Jell. The building is constructed from Portland stone and features a slate roof with mannered classical details. It has five main storeys and two tiers of dormers on a steep roof, organized into five bays.
The ground floor, which includes a mezzanine, has a central entrance to the Arcade and mid-20th century shop windows framed by original pilasters and an entablature. The upper floors are characterized by window bays defined by giant piers supporting an entablature above the fourth floor. The central three bays feature superimposed canted oriels extending to the fourth floor, where the windows are deeply recessed, creating an Ionic columned loggia. Attics are present above the outer bays, and the lower range of dormers has arched heads. The building also has prominent party stacks.
An ornamental iron balcony runs across the first floor, supported by modillion corbels, with iron balconettes on the second and third floor windows of the outer bays, and an iron railing on the fourth floor loggia. The Arcade itself is paved with black and white tiles and features shop fronts, each with a central entrance flanked by plate glass convex bowed windows. The ceiling is shallow barrel vaulted with two glazed saucer dormers.
The Jermyn Street facade consists of five storeys and five bays, displaying a similar but simplified design compared to the Piccadilly front. It features narrow metal canted oriels from the first to the third floors and a tall sheer attic.
