Description

This is a row of terraced houses with shops, dating from around 1790 to 1800. They were built as part of the Portman Estate development, linked to Upper Berkeley Street. The houses were constructed of stock brick with concealed slate roofs. The row comprises four storeys, with number 19 being slightly taller than the others. Each house is two windows wide, except for numbers 17 and 19, which each have three windows. The shop fronts were altered in the mid-19th century and have a plain, pilastered appearance, with console steps leading to the entablature fascia. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows set within flat, gauged red brick arches. A continuous stucco sill band runs along the third floor, topped by a stucco crowning cornice and blocking course. Numbers 14 to 18 form a uniform terrace, consistent in appearance with number 69 Upper Berkeley Street. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
