Description
The Church of St Clement Danes is a Grade I listed church located on the Strand in the City of Westminster. It was rebuilt between 1680 and 1682 by Sir Christopher Wren, who reused and recased 15th-century masonry from the west tower. Above the clock stage, the tower was completed with a spire by James Gibbs in 1719. The church was severely damaged during World War II and underwent restoration from 1955 to 1958 by W A S Lloyd.
Constructed from Portland stone, the church features a west tower and steeple, with an apsidal east end. The tower is flanked by two-storey domed lobbies that have segmental-headed doorways, and there is a heavy porch projecting from the base of the tower. Gibbs designed the bell stage openings, and the steeple rises in three diminishing octagonal stages, with the middle stage featuring a concave entablature. The lower register windows on the sides are squat, while tall semicircular arched windows in architraves above illuminate the galleries.
Inside, the restored interior includes a broad tunnel vault, galleries, and groin-vaulted aisles. Uniquely for a Wren church, the aisles continue as an ambulatory around the east end, which has a further semi-domed apse added.
