Description
Clement House is an office building constructed between 1909 and 1911 by Sir John Burnet. It features Portland stone ashlar cladding, a steel frame, and a slate roof. The design incorporates a subtle and restrained use of classical motifs, including figure sculpture, and is part of the Aldwych-Kingsway development. The building has six storeys plus an attic storey and a dormered mansard, with a façade that is seven windows wide and curves convexly along the line of Aldwych. The ground floor features a central entrance framed by coupled Doric columns, with flanking windows that enhance the depth and shadow created by the colonnade, thanks to the dark bronze detailing of the window and door frames. The upper floors have simplified classical detailing around the bronze casement windows, and there is a sharply profiled main entablature below the set-back attic storey. High relief carved figures are arranged in a triangular composition on the upper floors.
