Description

The Church of St Margaret, located on Lothbury in London, was built between 1686 and 1695 by Sir Christopher Wren. It features a simple, rectangular body with a lower south aisle, a vestry to the east, and a tower to the west. The south elevation is made of Portland stone and has round arched windows, a cornice, and a balustrade. The vestry includes a square-headed window with a circular opening above. The entrance at the base of the tower is framed by engaged Corinthian columns and a pediment. The tower itself is constructed in four stages and has round and segmentally arched openings, topped with a lead cupola and an obelisk with a weather vane. The sides and rear of the church are rendered with stone dressings similar to the south front but feature circular upper windows. There are various single-storey additions at the rear.

Inside, the church has an order of Corinthian pilasters and a colonnade in the south aisle. The flat ceiling features a cove with circular windows. There is a west gallery that houses the organ, and notable interior elements include a fine pulpit with a tester, reredos, altar rails, chancel screen, and other fittings, some of which were removed from demolished churches. The church also contains wall tablets, two of which feature busts, and brass chandeliers.
