Description
The Church of St Lawrence Jewry, built between 1670 and 1686 by Sir Christopher Wren, is a Grade I listed building located on the north side of Gresham Street, EC2. The church has a rectangular body, featuring a north aisle and a west tower, which is flanked by a vestibule and a chapel. The interior was destroyed during World War II and has been rebuilt in a near facsimile, although a clergy house has been added to the west end of the north aisle.
The exterior is constructed of Portland stone and includes round arched windows, with segmental arches in the attic or clerestory. The east elevation is elaborately designed with an engaged Corinthian portico set on a high pedestal, topped with a pediment against the attic. The south side features circular windows at either end above doorways, although the eastern doorway is now blocked. The north side is made of rubble with Portland stone dressings. The plain west front has two windows and a central doorway, with the tower rising above it. This tower is adorned with an entablature and balustrade, featuring four obelisks, and is crowned by a lead-covered lantern and spire.
Inside, the church boasts Corinthian pilasters that support a heavily beamed ceiling, but there are no old fittings remaining.
