Description
Gresham College, built in 1912 by Dendy Watney and Sydney Perks, is a classical stone building located on Gresham Street in London. It has three main storeys and an attic, featuring five bays facing Gresham Street and a four-bay return to Basinghall Street. The ground storey and basement form a high channelled base, with windows that have architraves and alternating segmental and triangular pediments supported by consoles. The first and second floors are adorned with attached giant Ionic columns in antis, with the first-floor windows featuring keystones and alternating pediments. There are three central windows with stone balconies supported by corbels. The building has an entablature with a pulvinated frieze and an enriched bracketed cornice, along with a recessed stone attic. The roof is slated and includes dormers. A notable feature is the fine door in a late 17th-century style, which is round-headed and flanked by blocked Roman Doric fluted columns, topped with an entablature and a broken triangular pediment. Decorative elements include cherubs' heads, garlands, and a large armorial cartouche displaying the Gresham grasshopper.
