Description

No. 74 Wimpole Street is a town house built in the 1770s for the Portland estate and refronted around 1850. It is constructed of stock brick with a stucco front and features a slate Mansard roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands four storeys tall with a basement, displaying a two-window range. The late 18th-century channelled stucco ground floor includes a fielded six-panelled door set within a segmental-arched architrave, flanked by Doric pilasters, with a square-headed 12-pane sash window to the left. The upper floors, which have rusticated quoins and a moulded cornice, were refronted around 1850. A stucco balustraded balcony is present on the first floor, featuring plate-glass sashes set in moulded square-headed architraves with bracketed cornices. The second-floor windows are four-pane sashes in moulded square-headed architraves with moulded sills and cornices, while a raised plat band is located beneath the third-floor sashes, also in moulded square-headed architraves. The property is enclosed by wrought-iron area railings with urn finials.

Inside, there are panelled shutters and doors set in moulded architraves enriched with egg and dart details in the first-floor rear room. The stair hall and ground floor rear room boast 18th-century modillioned plaster cornices, and there is a fine open-well staircase featuring column-on-vase balusters, an open string, finely-carved tread ends, and a wreathed handrail, with a similar closed-string balustrade extending from the ground floor to the basement.
