Description
CITY OF WESTMINSTER WIMPOLE STREET, Vi TQ 2881 SE (west side) 56/207 No 74 GV II Town house. Built in 1770s for Portland estate; refronted circa 1850. Stock brick with stucco front; slate Mansard roof. Double-depth plan. 4 storeys with basement; 2-window range. Late C18 channelled stucco ground floor has fielded 6-panelled door set in segmental-arched architrave flanked by Doric pilasters and with square-headed 12-pane sash to left. Upper floors, with rusticated quoins and moulded cornice, refronted circa 1850. Stucco balustraded stucco balcony to first floor, which has plate-glass sashes Set in moulded square- headed architraveS with bracketed cornices; 4-pane second-floor sashes set in moulded square-headed architraves with moulded sills and cornices; raised plat band beneath third-floor sashes set in moulded square-headed architraves. Wrought-iron area railings with urn finials. Interior: panelled shutters and doors set in moulded architraves, which are enriched with egg and dart details in the first-floor rear room ; C18 modillioned plaster cornices to stair hall and ground floor rear room and fine open-well staircase with column-on-vase balusters to open string with finely-carved tread ends and wreathed handrail, similar closed-string balustrade from ground floor to basement.
