Description
No. 48 Queen Anne Street is a terraced house built around 1760-1770 as part of the Portland Estate development. The building is constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and features a slate roof. It stands four storeys high with a basement and is two windows wide. To the right, there is a square-headed doorway with a panelled door and fanlight set in a recessed Doric pilaster doorcase. The ground floor has recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars, while the upper floors have flat gauged arches above the windows. A reeded stucco band finishes the stuccowork at the first floor level, and there is a parapet with coping above. A mid-19th century cast iron balcony spans the first floor, and the area is enclosed by wrought iron railings topped with flambé urn finials. Inside, the house retains a geometrical staircase with slender turned balusters, as well as plasterwork friezes and cornices, and a decorated ceiling on the front of the first floor.
