Description

This is a symmetrical terrace of houses at 30-37 Hyde Park Square, dating from approximately 1830 to 1840, and likely designed by Ledwell Taylor. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with stucco ground floors, featuring incised coursing, and have slate roofs. They rise four storeys high, with basements and dormered mansards. The fronts are arranged in a balanced composition of 3, 6, 6, 6, and 3 bays, with the end houses slightly forward. Each house has a corniced and architraved doorway on either side. The windows are recessed sash windows, most with glazing bars. Those on the first floor have architraves and cornices, with pediments over the end houses and the central pair; the second floor windows have only architraves. An entablature features a dentil cornice above the second floor, an attic cornice and a blocking course. A continuous cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern runs along the first floor, while cast iron spearhead area railings provide enclosure. The roofline is punctuated by party wall-mounted, stucco-faced, corniced chimney stacks. The terrace was part of the Tyburnia development, originally planned in 1827 by S.P. Cockerell for the Bishop of London's Estate (Church Commissioners), but later laid out according to a modified plan by Cockerell’s successor, G Gutch.
