Description
A row of terraced town houses numbers 14 to 23 Upper Wimpole Street, dating from circa 1780 to 1790 and forming part of the Portland Estate development. The houses were likely designed by John White. They are constructed of stock brick, with channelled or rusticated brick to the ground floors, except for number 22. The roofs are slate-covered, with dormered mansards. The buildings are four storeys high, with basements. Each front is three windows wide, in a simple style.
A broad, semicircular arched doorway is located on the left side. Number 20 features Coade vermiculations and a keystone to its arch. Numbers 14 and 18 have panelled front doors with side lights, fluted and reeded jambs, fluted doorheads, and fanlights above. Numbers 19 to 23 have double-panelled front doors with antae jambs, cornice-doorheads, and patterned fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, each set within a flat, gauged arch. Plat bands run above the ground floors. Number 19 has a sill band on the second floor. Numbers 16 to 18 and 22 have bracketed cornices over their second floors. Parapets with cornices top the buildings.
Numbers 19, 21, and 23 are exceptions, but the other houses have early 19th-century geometric patterned and later 19th-century scrolled cast iron balconies or balconettes. Cast iron area railings with plumbed spike finials run along the front. The interiors have not been inspected.
