Description

Nos. 33 to 41 Devonshire Place are a group of terraced town houses built around 1790 to 1800 as part of the Portland Estate development, extending Upper Wimpole Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick with rusticated or channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. They are arranged as four storeys and dormered mansards (Nos. 37 and 41), or five storeys with basements. Each house is three windows wide, although No. 41 has a five-window return front with an entrance to Devonshire Street.

The wide, semicircular arched doorways are on the right-hand side. These contain panelled double doors and side lights within panelled or pilaster jambs, topped with moulded doorheads and fanlights; some fanlights retain patterned glazing. Recessed sash windows are found throughout, with the ground floor windows of No. 41 arranged in a blind arcade. The upper floors have windows in stucco reveals, set within flat, gauged brick arches (some red brick). A plat band defines the top of the stucco work at the first floor level. Parapets feature coping or bracketed stucco crowning cornices; No. 38 incorporates a guilloche string course over the third floor.

Early to mid-19th century cast iron balconies, with scroll or geometrical patterns, are present on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are intact at Nos. 38 and 39, while the remaining houses have railings with tasselled spike finials and twisted standards. The return front of No. 41 to Devonshire Street features five windows (two blind) and a stucco porch with Ionic columns.
