Description

These are a group of terraced houses at 176-184 Gloucester Place, NW1, built around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with stuccoed ground floors on numbers 182 and 184, and have slate roofs. They are four storeys high with a basement. The fronts are each three windows wide, except for number 176, which has only two.

The doorways have semicircular arches to the right, with panelled doors set within jambs composed of Doric columns (or pilasters on number 176), corniced heads, and fanlights, some of which are patterned. The windows are recessed sash windows, most with glazing bars, and are set within flat, gauged arches. A stone-coped parapet tops the buildings. Decorative balconies with a geometric-anthemion pattern are positioned on the first floor. Original cast iron area railings, topped with urn finials, are also present. These houses represent part of a particularly extensive series of Georgian terraced houses within London.
