Description
St James's Club is a Grade I listed town house located on Piccadilly in the City of Westminster, built around 1761 for Sir Hugh Hunlock. From 1764, it was owned by Lord Coventry, for whom Robert Adam created significant interior designs in 1765. The building underwent further remodelling by Thomas Cundy Senior around 1810-11, along with later alterations for its use as a club.
The exterior features a Palladian facade made of Portland stone with a slate roof, standing three storeys tall with a basement and five windows across. The ground floor is rusticated with channelling and semi-circular arched recesses for the openings. The entrance is located up steps to the right of centre, featuring a semicircular fanlight. The recessed sashes have glazing bars that radiate to the heads. The first and second floor windows are framed with architrave surrounds, with alternating pediments on the first floor. Above, there is a balustraded parapet over a modillion cornice, and a late 18th to early 19th century cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern spans the first floor.
On the return to Brick Street, there is a large Venetian staircase window. The interior preserves significant elements of its 1761 decoration, including a grand stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade that begins in one flight and returns in two, illuminated by the Venetian window. The ground floor features doorcases and doors from 1761, along with small octagonal closets at the rear on the ground and first floors. The main rooms on the first floor were redecorated by Adam, showcasing painted ceilings and other details.
