Description

17 Savile Row is a terrace house dating from around 1733, with early and mid-19th century alterations. The building is faced with stucco and has a slate roof. Originally, it was three storeys and a basement, but a third floor and gabled attic were added later. The facade is three windows wide, with a semi-circular arched doorway to the right, featuring a beribboned bay-leaf architrave and a globe lantern above the fanlight. To the left, there is a canted bay window set in a recess, with a cornice supported by Egyptian-style consoles. The upper floors have casement and sash windows in shallow architraves, with plat bands on the first and second floors, and cornices on the third and fourth floors. The hipped gable is topped with an ornate weathervane. A cast iron balcony on the first floor is supported by twisted iron columns. In front of the doorway, there are wrought iron area railings and original stone obelisks. This house was the residence of architect George Basevi from 1832 to 1842, as noted by a plaque from the London County Council. The interior is similar to that of No 16 but has been significantly altered in the early 19th and 20th centuries, retaining a mutilated dog leg staircase and a panelled front room on the first floor with an enriched cornice. The building is part of the Burlington Estate.
