Description

Nos. 19 to 21 Great Marlborough Street is a police court built between 1912 and 1913 by J.D. Butler. The building is constructed from Portland stone and features a slate roof, showcasing a restrained Free Classicism style. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and is seven bays wide. The tall ground floor is channelled and includes flanking side entrances as well as a central enclosed porch with an archivolted entrance. There are semicircular arched windows on the ground floor, with three grouped on each side of the porch in segmental bows. The upper storeys are flanked by Ionic pilasters and feature paired windows set in carved architraves. A cornice and crowning balustrade with ball finialed dies and a central pedestal carved with the Royal Arms complete the exterior. Inside, the building retains three reset late 18th-century chimneypieces, two made of white marble with green marble inlay and the third made of wood and composition.
